night. It is possible that this same “man,” who is later identified as an angel, appeared to Jacob’s grandfather Abraham at Mamre (see Genesis 18:1). The angel had come to Abraham as a traveler; on this memorable night, he appeared as Jacob’s enemy and opponent. True to form, Jacob used the same carnal weapons he had used in the past to contend with God: He wrestled with the angel in his own natural strength.
